There are not many boy's high school coaches in the ABV area that are former Division I players.

Head coach Tim Weaver at Agape Christian Academy is one of those coaches but it was quite a while ago when he played three seasons at what was then known as Memphis State University.

He graduated from MSU in 1963.

He played prep basketball at West Frankfort here in southern Illinois before playing for the Tigers.

Agape Christian Academy isn't an official IHSA member so they are not eligible for entry into the state tournaments in any sport.

However the Knights are a member of the South Egyptian Conference and they have been for a few years now.

Agape ended their season at 10-14 in 2017-18, an improvement according to Coach Weaver, and with just one missing piece from last season's team, he will have plenty of experienced players returning for this winter.

Coach Weaver will look to Matt Keller, a 5-foot-11 senior guard, who led the team with 25 p.p.g.

“He (Keller) should reach 1,000 this year, as did his brother Will a couple or so years back,” said Coach Weaver.

Six-foot-two senior Zach McDannel is a three-year starter for the Knights and also the leading rebounder on the squad.

Johnanthon Daly is a 5-foot-10 sophomore who started last season as a freshman.

Two juniors; 5-foot-8 Ethan Gray and 6-foot-1 Josten Stanley will likely start.

Stanley is a transfer from Sesser-Valier.

“He (Stanley) didn't play a lot there, but a welcome addition to our team. You can tell that he comes from a good Shane Garner program,” said Coach Weaver. “The South Egyptian will be good again with Meridian, of course, Cobden, Elverado and Egyptian will be good. We hope to be able to compete well in and out of the conference, but there are no easy games in the SEC.”

OUTLOOK – ABV doesn't know much about this program since they are only an associate member of the IHSA so they can't play in the IHSA state tournament or any IHSA regular season tournaments. There admission into the SEC helped to balance out the schedules of the teams giving everyone eight conference games. Having an experienced coach running the program helps. The Knights have some players that should help get some extra wins this season.
