CHRISTOPHER
BY JACK BULLOCK
It wasn't that long ago that the highlight of most Christopher basketball season's was a good showing at their own Thanksgiving Tournament.
But the goals have been set a lot higher in the most recent history as head coach Eric Stallman has installed a new found formula for success.
The Bearcats have gradually made strides and last season they not only won a regional for the first time since 1992 but they managed to reach a sectional final.
After splitting two games with Woodlawn during the regular season, the Bearcats took it on the chin from the Cardinals in the rubber game, 67-48 at the Gallatin County 1A Sectional.
Woodlawn went on to state and finished fourth while Christopher closed the book on a stellar 25-4 run.
Coach Stallman has some work to do, replacing some seniors missing and losing an important transfer.
Hunter Wheeler, a 5-foot-9 point guard, has left as has 6-foot-3 forward Josh Calloni.
Forward Issac McPhail moved to Waltonville for his senior season so the program has three openings in the starting lineup.
Look for Bradley Young, an ABV first team 1A All-South pick, to get even better after a very good sophomore season.
The 6-foot-3 junior forward topped the Bearcats in most categories (16.7 p.p.g.) last season.
Kaeleb Pedigo, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, tossed in 13.1 points a night for Christopher.
Baseball standout Gabe Schimpf also is pretty good on the hardcourt, as the 5-foot-8 senior added 4.7 points a game.
Pedigo has committed to playing baseball at Southeast Missouri State University.
Jared Curry is a 6-foot-5 junior who Coach Stallman is going to ask to play the point.
“We return two starters off of last years 25-4 team. We lost a lot of talent and experience. It is going to be very hard to replace Hunter Wheeler and all he did as a point guard for our team,” said Coach Stallman. “We will be a much different team this season, we will have to play slower and much better defense, once the kids understand we must do things differently than last year we will start to improve.”
