For head coach Justin Roedl it will be a year of varsity playing time meeting inexperienced players.

Cumberland graduated the bulk of their varsity minutes and production from an 18-13 club that lost to Effingham St. Anthony at the 2A St. Anthony Regional semifinals.

But this is a new year and a class drop to 1A for this club that is now part of the newly formed Lincoln Prairie Conference.

The Pirates will likely come south for the state tournament and by then this club could be a threat in the smaller classification.

Five seniors are missing from last season; Zach Wolke, Connor Butler, Myles Gerhardt, Brice LaBaume and Alex Talley.

Wolke was a multi-year starter for Cumberland.

This year Coach Roedl will turn to three players who started at times last winter and logged a lot of important minutes on the floor.

Brennyn Cutts, a 6-foot-3 junior forward, returns for the Pirates and he was very important to their success last winter averaging 13.5 points and 5.7 rebounds.

Ross Hemmen, a 6-foot junior guard, added 4.2 points a game while 6-foot-2 junior Wyatt Napier provided 3.6 p.p.g.

Coach Roedl also mentioned some others, including a pair of seniors.

Five-foot-six senior Cameron Jones and 6-foot Nick Dill.

Memphis Waggoner, a 5-foot-10 junior guard and 6-foot junior guard Wyatt Brant will also be a part of the Pirates' ship.

“We are going to be fairly young and inexperienced for a varsity team however we do bring back three juniors who have seen a lot of varsity time and have started for us in the past. I think we are going to be improved on the defensive side of things and hope to get out and pressure teams more than we have in the past. We have three kids that can score the basketball but we are going to need some other guys to step up and fill their roles in order for us to be successful. I look for us to improve as the year progresses with our younger kids figuring out what it takes to play varsity basketball. I am excited for this year as I see a more focused/disciplined group that wants to play hard and be successful,” said Coach Roedl.

OUTLOOK – They lost a lot of weapons to graduation but this crew looks to be pretty good and the waters won't be nearly as deep when the postseason begins. This team will play against some of the better teams in their area and it will be a good measuring stick of where they will be late in the season.
