GALLATIN COUNTY
BY JACK BULLOCK
The Gallatin County pulled some major surprises last season in a post-season run as the Hawks won a regional title at Hardin County with a victory over top-seeded Cairo, 74-64 in overtime to advance to the Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Sectional.

Head coach Doug Miller saw his team eliminate Christopher in the semifinals at NCOE before running into perennial power Woodlawn in the finale.

A bad fourth quarter stretch resulted in a 50-40 defeat that ended the outstanding campaign at 21-9.

Coach Miller lost some good ones to graduation, including first-team ABV all-south pick Seth Ramsey along with Luis Rubio and Trevor Duval from a team that won the conference regular season title and also picked up some quality regular season wins, including a victory over 3A Massac County at the Eldorado Holiday Tournament.

Three starters do return for the Hawks as they head into 2017-18.

Six-foot junior Audie Goebel averaged nearly 10-points a contest while 5-foot-9 junior Robbie Prince added 4.5 points a night.

Five-foot-seven senior Aaron Walters was a part-time starter last winter and averaged 3.9 p.p.g.

Two juniors; 5-foot-10 Garrett Rushing and 5-foot-10 Lucas Reeder, along with 6-foot-1 sophomore Dawson Hish should hog most of the varsity floor time.

According to Coach Miller, his young team will need some time to gel in 2017-18.

“You wont see the best of our team until around January because of our youth on the floor. we only have one senior on the team in Walters who will bring leadership to this team as well as Goebel and Prince,” said Coach Miller. “They are two year starters and they both should show progress from their experience in big games the past 2 years. then we could start one of five players in the other two spots. I like this team because of their work ethic and attitudes. I respect them and they respect me and that's a good combination.”

OUTLOOK – Coach Miller has this program on the right path. The kids and coach believe in each other and that shows with the success that they have had in the past few seasons. ABV has no doubt that this run of success will continue this season once all of the youngsters mature into the varsity setting.
