JUNCTION GALLATIN COUNTY
BY JACK BULLOCK
One of the top 1A players in the Deep South resides in Gallatin County and head coach Doug Miller is glad that he has Seth Ramsey around for one more season.
Ramsey, an ABV Special Mention 1A player last season as well as GEC Player of the Year, Ramsey is already over the 1,500-point mark for his career and should join the 2,000-point club this season.
The 5-foot-11 playmaker leads by example on and off the floor, according to Coach Miller.
The Hawks finished the season at 16-13 with one of the highlights being a big 62-52 overtime win over Crab Orchard to win the Greater Egyptian Conference tournament last February.
“We started out the season 0-6 but the young kids improved and proved that hard work pays off,” said Coach Miller, who has coached at Thompsonville and NCOE before arriving in Gallatin County. “We were co GEC champs and GEC tournament champs last season.”
But it the Hawks are going to continue to fly high, someone else in the nest is going to have to soar.
Coach Miller, who as a player was part of a third place team at McLeansboro back in 1991, will look for some kids to step up and complement Ramsey.
Five-foot-ten sophomore Robbie Prince got on a the floor a lot as a freshman last season as did 6-foot sophomore Audie Goebel.
Coach Miller threw the freshman into the fire last season and they responded in a big way for the Hawks.
There are seniors back that shouldn't be overlooked.
Trevor Duvall, a 5-foot-8 guard, along with 5-foot-11 Bryon Wargel, return as are Hunter Walters and 5-foot-10 Luis Rubio.
Sophomores also mentioned by this mentor include 5-foot-11 guard Lucas Reeder and 5-foot-11 Garrett Rushing.
“Seth Ramsey is a coaches' dream. He works hard every possession and every drill. He is a program maker. He makes his teammates raise their game and leads by example. He's great on and off the court a truly great person. He's my voice on the court and tries to please me more than any kid I've ever coached. Not only Seth but I really like this team. They are respectful to our staff, teachers and each other. Everyone gets along and are friends off the court. This is a special group to me and my coaching staff. I have four great assistants that work extremely hard. How good can we be this year? That will be decided by whether or not we can rebound. Our biggest guy is 6 foot and a half.”
