With five of their top six players returning from a 20-9 team that reached a regional title game, the Marshall Lions look like one of the 2A favorites in the south central part of the state and a definite threat at making a long run in the post-season.
Head coach Tim Pearison took over the club late last fall and kept the team heading forward as they managed to get to the regional final before losing to eventual supersectional team Teutopois, 58-50, on the Wooden Shoes' hardwood.
Coach Pearison lost just one key player (Chazz Lindsey 10.8 p.p.g.) from a year ago.
The returning players have a some goals set, including winning the Little Illini Conference championship.
Top gun 6-foot-3 senior Josiah Wallace, a now four-year starter, led the club with 19.5 points and 5.3 rebounds a game last season.
Brock Finkbiner, a 6-foot-2 senior, pitched in 13.4 points and dished out four assists a night.
Six-foot-six senior Spencer Shaffner is another multiple year varsity performer, as he added 11.9 points and grabbed 6.7 rebounds as a junior.
Reid Brown, a 6-foot-6 senior (9.8 p.p.g., 7.9 r.p.g.) also returns as does Derrick Sollers, a 5-foot-10 senior guard (2.9 p.p.g.).
Having this much talent returning is a luxury for Coach Pearison as they get set for some serious battles in the coming weeks, beginning with the Capital Classic in Lawrence County.
Wallace, Finkbiner and Shaffner are all approaching the 1,000-point plateau.
“We have a good inside/outside game with six senior veterans,” said Coach Pearison, who has coaching stints at Abingdon and Fairfield before taking over last season.
