For head coach John Webber, his first season at Marshall produced a 21-9 mark and a heartbreaking end in the postseason.

The Lions were on the cusp of picking up a regional crown at Shelbyville but they fell in overtime in the title game to Pana, 72-71, ending the season in an untimely fashion for everyone involved.

But that was then, and a new season is upon this program and this coaches' second season could be even better than the first.

Coach Webber has a lot of talent returning from that regional runner up that are ready to suit up the first weekend of the season at the annual Lawrence County Capital Classic.

Isaac Wood, Kyle Sanders and Skylar McManus graduated from the squad last spring but four starters return with a lot of attainable goals listed on the chalkboard.

Six-foot-one senior guard Jadon Wallace is a returning starter for Marshall.

Joining him in the backcourt is 6-foot junior guard Daniel Tingley.

Up front is 6-foot-7 senior forward Jesse Burdick and 6-foot-3 post player Ethan Harper.

In the running for minutes after playing varsity last winter are 5-foot-10 senior guard Ethan Keown and 6-foot-5 junior forward Lance Rees.

Two additional seniors Coach Webber could use are 5-foot-11 guard Jacob Shaffner and 6-foot-2 Brayden Francis. Shaffner didn't play his junior year but is back.

Six-foot-one junior guard Luke Cook and 6-foot-1 junior guard Ben Ross are also in the running.

“While last year we had very little experience, a new coach and a new process that these kids were not use to, this year there is familiarity and expectation that needs to find growth both individually and as a team so we can take another step forward in our program," said Coach Webber. “I do feel like with a senior and experienced junior led team we should compete in every game we play.”

OUTLOOK – In Class 2A Marshall is the ABV “sleeper” team. The Lions are in the far northeast part of the postseason that feeds south to SIU Arena. They have experience back, size and some skill position players. The let a 16 point halftime lead slip away in the regional final last February and that will provide even more motivation. They will be a factor late and will be part of the chase for the Little Illini Conference championship.
