The Paris Tigers came out of the gate like gangbusters, going 10-1 to start the season.

But a key injury to one of their top players spoiled the party and Paris never really recovered.

Losing senior Salem Isaf to injury had an effect to the chemistry of the team and they slipped to just 13-16 overall before losing to Urbana in the 3A Regional.

Chris Johnson was also a senior on that team that is now gone.

Coach Shawn Nugent heads into the season with some key returning players and some newcomers in uniform.

Nugent mentioned 6-foot-1 senior Zach Burger and a pair of 5-foot-8 senior guards; Brody Spencer and Gary Hopper.

Another senior; 5-foot-10 guard Kayin Lawson returns.

Look for seniors DJ Fessant, a 6-foot-2 forward, along with 5-foot-8 senior guard John Eslinger and 5-foot-9 senior Austin White to be in the running for minutes along with freshman guard Mason Hutchings.

Senior Bryce Krabel, a 6-foot-2 transfer in from nearby Chrisman, should help out at Paris.

“I love how our team has been competing these first few practices. We are not a big team so we will need to rely heavily on our speed. So far, I like what I see in practice. We are capable of generating a lot of our offense with our defense. Hopefully our depth will be a big asset for us this season,” said Coach Nugent, who is approaching 200-wins for his career.”

OUTLOOK – Coach Nugent is hoping that this team can recapture some of the magic that they began last season with. Replacing the two graduated seniors will be tough but the ones returning should help.
