Coach Mark Briggs begins his 17th season coaching at Roxana as the head coach.
Last season was a pretty good one, as the Shells finished 20-11, the third 20-win campaign in the last five seasons.
Roxana was so close to winning the regional title, only they lost to their long-time rivals Alton Marquette in overtime in the title game at Dupo (48-45).
This season Coach Briggs must replace three starters (Trace Gentry, Chance Foss and Blake Vandiver) who graduated.
Gentry was the top-gun for the Shells, as he scored 18.4 points a night.
The second leading scorer from last season was Zack Golenor, a 6-foot guard who averaged 13.7 p.p.g.
He is over 900-points for his career so far and 1,000 will be attained soon.
Six-foot-three junior Zach Haas returns after tossing in nearly three points a night.
Cody McMillen, a 6-foot-5 junior, is back (5.8 p.p.g., 4.2 r.p.g.) along with 6-foot-3 forward Jacob Maguire, who grew five inches since last season.
Five-foot-nine senior guard Trey Kelly, 5-foot-8 senior guard Dakota Stumpf are back along with junior guard 5-foot-9 Austin Presley and two sophomore guards, 5-foot-11 James Perry and 5-9 guard Eddy Lara.
“Our kids know how to win and understand the hard work required to be successful,” said Coach Briggs. “Our success will hinge on how well we execute on the defensive end of the floor. We are looking forward to another year full of challenges.”
Roxana is now a 3A team, which changes the dynamic of its season and future scheduling.
