VIENNA
BY JACK BULLOCK
Vienna head coach Cory Waters got his team competing with some really good programs that used to have their way with the Eagles in previous seasons.
In the Black Diamond East, they struggled to move up the standings.
However last season marked back-to-back winning seasons for this program, as they ended up 17-14 against some good teams.
They picked up some big wins in the season, including a come-from-behind win over eventual regional winner Carterville at the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic.
Coach Waters club finished second in the league standings at 7-3 behind Carmi-White County.
Sadly the Eagles will have to continue to move forward with out the programs' third all-time leading scorer.
Zachryn Moore graduated last spring and took with him a ton of stats that will need to be replaced.
Other seniors who are missing include Jarrod Wiggs, Jace Ennis and Ryan Bradley.
Moore was a special mention ABV 2A all-south pick while Wiggs and Moore were both all-BDC.
Senior Brandon Casey, a 6-foot-4 guard is a returning starter as is 6-foot-1 junior Ben Daine, who moved into the starting line up last last season.
Kids looking to move up for the Eagles include two seniors; 5-foot-9 Lucas Strickland and 6-foot-1 Dalton Smith. Both are listed as guards on the roster and should help keep the backcourt sound.
Coach Waters mentioned five juniors, three of which will help with some added height.
Six-foot-three juniors Nolan Dahncke and Hugo Quintana are also listed as backcourt players while 6-foot-4 junior Trenton Hyde should play up front.
One other junior, Jakob Breeden, is a 5-foot-9 guard.
Vienna will have three sophomores; 6-foot-4 Zane Hutchison, 6-foot-4 Gabe Snell and 5-foot-10 Justin Casey.
With the switch to the other side of the conference (West Division) the Eagles will play against some teams a bit smaller than the ones in the East.
“We graduated a lot of scoring but the guys we have returning have put in the hours this summer and plan on making this season better than last,” said Coach Waters. “Any of the guys listed could contribute. Brandon Casey, Ben Daine, Nolan Dahncke and Lucas Strickland have the most experience returning.”
