The Bulldogs bowed out of the 3A Waterloo Regional to eventual champs Columbia, 68-49 in the first round.

The Waterloo Bulldogs head into the 2018-19 campaign like a lot of teams in the area.

Coach Dane Walter has seniors to replace from his club that took the floor a year ago and went 7-23 overall and 0-10 in the MVC.

“We lost four starters from last year’s squad including our leading scorer and 1,000-point scorer Ross Schrader,” said Coach Walter. “Other starters lost include Eli Dodd, Derek Smothers and Jackson Ivers.”

Schrader led the way with 13.1 points a game while Dodd added 12.3.

Smothers and Ivers were in the six points a game range, so Coach Walters has a lot of production to replace heading into 2018-19.

However one important cog in the wheel returns after a productive junior season.

Six-foot-two senior point guard Tre Wahlig averaged 11.7 points a game.

Six-foot junior Austin Balabas transferred to Waterloo from O'Fallon and he should be part of the proceedings along with 5-foot-10 Jake Wade.

Wade was the first Bulldog off of the bench last winter as a sophomore.

Six-foot-four senior Nathan Brown played hurt last winter and he is back.

Rounding out the opening night lineup should be 6-foot-2 junior Jackson McAlister.

Six-foot freshman Ty Lenhardt and 6-foot-2 senior Sam Kreinberg should see action off of the bench.

“We will be undersized most every night. We are lean on our guard play and going to use our athleticism and quickness to be scrappy,” said Coach Walter, who begins his fourth year at Waterloo. “Wahlig, Balabas, and Wade are going to have to get after the basketball in the front court. We are working hard to create a basketball culture of winning and playing great defense. Our ability to guard and pressure the basketball will be the biggest key for us.”

OUTLOOK – The Bulldogs will have to fight for every win this season as they are playing in a conference that top to bottom looks to be improved. Like the rest of the teams in the MVC, the non-conference games will be brutal, especially for an undersized squad. Continued hard work should pay dividends for the Dawgs this season.
