WATERLOO GIBAULT
BY JACK BULLOCK
Head coach Dennis Rueter is approaching another coaching milestone that few in the sport of high school basketball have reached.
As of the beginning of the season, Coach Rueter is 19-wins shy of 700 for his career.
The mentor will soon start his 37th season as head coach of Waterloo Gibault and his overall mark is 681-354.
He would have liked to have gotten win number 682 last March at the Jacksonville 1A Supersectional.
However his Hawks ended up losing to Liberty, 41-37 after having a seven point lead in the fourth quarter.
Gibault finished the season at 24-10 against a strong schedule of games.
They lost two close games to Metro-East Lutheran during the season only to turn the tables on the Knights to win the Bunker Hill Regional.
They pulled the same sort of turnaround in beating Okawville to win the White Hall-North Greene Sectional title. Gibault had split a pair of games with the Rockets but had lost to them 59-37 in the championship game of the Okawville Tournament.
This season, as it has been previously with this private school, the IHSA has shifted them back to 2A for boy's basketball.
Coach Rueter's club will have three returning starters back, including the top scorer from their sectional championship team.
The two that graduated averaged some important figures last winter.
Six-foot-six forward Brian Deterding (14 points, nine rebounds) and 5-foot-11 guard Jacob Rueter (11 points, six assists).
Trevor Davis, a 6-foot-3 senior forward, averaged 15.3 points a contest for the Hawks last season as a junior starter.
He also led Gibault with 9.6 rebounds per game.
Six-foot-five senior Collin Kessler (5.7 p.p.g., 4.6 r.p.g.) is also a returning starter.
Garrett Rueter, a 5-foot-11 senior, added 5.4 points per outing.
Coach Rueter mentioned Karson Huels (3.9 p.p.g.) as a potential starter.
Huels is a 5-foot-9 sophomore.
“Obviously Trevor Davis is our 'go to guy' but our shooters around him will be key to success offensively,” said Coach Rueter. “Our defense will need some work.”
