LOUISVILLE - After a couple of tough losses the previous week on the road (Webber Township, Altamont) Woodlawn Cardinals were looking to get back on track.

They found a good spot to rally the troops.

Clay County.

Woodlawn made consecutive trips to Flora and Louisville for their reboot this week.

Following a Tuesday night win over the Wolves, the Cardinals headed into Saturday night's game against North Clay like it was a postseason encounter in front of a large crowd on the road.

The squad took no prisoners.

Woodlawn scored the first nine points and led 14-2 before Coach Josh Zink and his North Clay Cardinals knew the license plate of the bus that hit them.

Coach Cooper's bunch never let up, rolling to a 62-38 triumph at North Clay's impressive new gymnasium.

“We talked about treating this like a regional final, playing at someone else's house where they have a good gym, a good crowd and known for having good atmospheres,” said Coach Cooper. “Our goal was to come in here and take over the place as the visiting team and I felt like we did that in the first quarter with our defense and our energy.”

With the victory the Cardinals improved to 16-2 overall and are back on track heading into the final Midland Trail Conference Tournament next week as the host.

The usual suspects put on the offensive show on Saturday for Woodlawn with junior Luke McKay and senior Kyle Cooper throwing in the points.

McKay netted 20 in the win, including and exclamation point slam dunk in the fourth quarter.

Cooper added 17 to the batch while senior Kylan Moser scored 11 for the Cardinals.

The defensive effort helped start the rout as they held North Clay scoreless for the first four minutes of the game.

North Clay, coming off of a heartbreaking overtime loss the night before to Altamont, were never really in the contest Saturday night.

Senior Cody Zimdars scored 11-points to top the Cardinals' scoring while no one else ended up with double-digits.

Carder Walden netted nine-points and Coach Zink got six-points apiece from junior Lucas Griffey and senior Mason Byers.

“It got away from us early on then you're playing from behind a really good team that plays fundamentally really strong basketball,” said Coach Zink. “Guarding the ball, discipline on offense, and they did what they wanted to do the whole game and we didn't do much about it.”

Woodlawn struck early and often and when Coach Cooper's club missed shots, they went up and got the rebounds.

McKay (2) and Cooper nailed 3-pointers in the first quarter and Woodlawn snagged six offensive rebounds in the first eight minutes.

Moser scored in transition and junior Tyson Frick scored his only two points on put back to give Woodlawn the early edge, 17-7 at the end of the first quarter.

North Clay got to within seven-points one time in the game before Woodlawn shifted into second gear.

A score by Byers and two free throws by senior Kade Atwood closed the gap to just 19-12 at the 3:57 mark of the second frame.

Moser scored on a fast break after one of North Clay's seven second quarter turnovers and converted the three-point play as he was fouled on the lay in.

Cooper added another 3-pointer from the top of the circle before Coach Cooper got an added bonus before the half.

Senior guard Logan Heater, a key reserve for Woodlawn, stepped off the bench and nailed down an “icing on the cake” 3-pointer from the left corner to wrap up a 30-15 first half for Woodlawn as the Cardinals showed that they are more than just its starting unit.

“We have eight really good players and I need to do a better job of using them,” said Coach Cooper. “When you get in the big games you always try to have your five top dogs in there and I felt like early in the year the big games kind of piled up on us. We were in quite a few with tournaments and our regular season schedule. But we said in the second half (of the schedule) we have to make it a point to use our guys because they're capable. That will make us fresher for the postseason.”

McKay opened the second half with a 3-pointer and then a scored on a back door cut on an assist from Frick for a 35-16 advantage.

Then the best and only real run by North Clay happened with consecutive scores from Byers, Zimdars and Walden to trail by just 13.

That was it for the hosts.

Woodlawn closed out the third quarter as Cooper added to his totals with another long range bomb and a score on a nice cut to the basket.

McKay added an inbounds basket and Woodlawn led 46-27 heading to the fourth quarter.

“They (Woodlawn) every possession matters. They will work hard every single possession and they don't move on to the next possession until that one is complete with success and they did a really good job of that,” said Coach Zink. “The things we do well we did not do tonight at all. We just got wore out early and that is a credit to them.”

Senior Baylor Rollie only netted four-points on the night but he finished an assist from Moser early in the fourth quarter for a score for the Cardinals.

By the time McKay and Cooper hung two more 3-point bombs on North Clay, it was 58-31 Woodlawn.

McKay pick up a steal near mid-court before driving in the lane for a one-handed slam and a 60-31 lead before the reserves took care of the rest of the contest.

Woodlawn held a commanding 33-14 rebounding edge, allowing only one North Clay offensive rebound.

The victors canned 25-of-53 from the field and nailed down half of their 3-point attempts, going 9-of-18.

They finished with 12 turnovers, but only four of them in the second half with one late by the mop up crew.

“We did a better job both offensively and defensively than we did last week. I thought this was our best game on both sides of the ball and offensively everyone played their role and what they needed to do,” said Coach Cooper. “We've been working on executing our sets a little better. We're really just trying to sharpen things up and keep climbing up the mountain.”

North Clay committed 18 turnovers, which didn't help matters, and hit just 15-of-36 shots, 3-of-13 from the arc.

“We pretty much wore out with three big games this week and we don't really have a strong bench so we're playing five or six guys and it really showed tonight,” said Coach Zink.

Woodlawn hosts what looks like a very interesting 95th and final Midland Trail Conference Tournament next week with a first round game against Cisne on Tuesday while North Clay heads back action in the National Trail Conference with a game at Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg on Tuesday and then a non-conference road game at Ramsey on Friday.

The members of the Midland Trail Conference voted in the fall to end the conference tournament after this season.

“I'm one of the few guys who did not want to see it (MTC Tournament) go. “I'm a traditionalist. I know people get tired of playing each other but it's a good experience for our kids,” said Coach Cooper. “I'm very happy it's at our place and there are some really good teams but this (win) was a good step in the right direction heading into next week.”
