Jumping out to a early lead and then re-energizing with a big third quarter – Breese Central rolled into the semifinals of the Nashville Invitational Tournament with a easy win over Waltonville on Wednesday night.

Coach Stan Eagleson's squad led 9-0 in the first two minutes and overcame a brief lull in the first quarter to win 93-43.

Brandon Book continued is scoring prowess by netting a game-best 27-points.

This 6-foot-6 junior forward was an accurate 10-of-13 from the floor as Central improved to 16-2 on the season.

“Brandon (Book) did a pretty good job finishing when he got to the rim tonight,” said Central head coach Stan Eagleson. “The way they (Waltonville) played him (double-team) he had a pretty nice game.”

Keaton Scheer – who has struggled some offensively especially from outside this season according to Coach Eagleson – took advantage of Waltonville's zone defense attempt at stopping Book by nailing four 3-pointers to finish with 16-points.

Central's Alex Timmerman followed up with 11-points as three Cougars' ended up in double-figures.

“It was good to see Keaton (Scheer) take some shots first of all because a lot of teams we play try to cheat off of him on the inside on Book and we are going to have to step up and make those shots,” added Coach Eagleson.

Waltonville saw its mark fall to 6-10 on the season as the Spartans were led by Jordan Hale with 13-points.

Book scored six of his points during that 9-0 scoring spree to open the game and Waltonville could get no closer than seven points the rest of the game.

Showing his ability to finish around the rim – Book three consecutive shots and his fast break bucket on a pass from Nick Grapperhaus forced a Waltonville early timeout.

When Scheer connected on his first 3-point bomb of the game – Central led 14-5 with 4:37 left in the first quarter.

Hale scored seven of his points early and helped give the Spartans some early hope.

However Central put together another run (7-0) as the Cougars finished the first quarter up 21-10.

Waltonville was still within striking distance until an 8-0 Central run doubled up the score on the Spartans late in the second quarter.

Book, Scheer and Brandon Rakers all scored during the run and when Scheer delivered another trifecta from the left corner – the score had ballooned to 40-20 with just over a minute left before intermission.

An 18-2 scoring bonanza to open the third quarter sealed the deal for Breese Central.

Another Scheer bomb from the right corner was followed up by four points from Book and suddenly the scoreboard read 62-26 with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter.

The Cougars were 37-of-68 from the field overall and 10-of-25 from behind the 3-point line.

Central held a 41-14 rebounding edge over the smaller Spartans while forcing 17-turnovers.

Blake Norrenberns added eight points for Coach Eagleson's team while dishing out a team-high four assists.

Waltonville had a few bright spots but one of them was Hale – a 6-foot-5 sophomore – who led his team with eight rebounds to go with his 13-points.

Seniors' Levi Kabat and Luke Stanhouse scored nine and seven respectively for Waltonville.

Central's defense held the Spartans to just 16-of-43 shooting on the night.

“Obviously we had more depth then they (Waltonville) do and we adjusted to their zone defense. We didn't feel like we had a good first half but I thought that the second half was much better,” added Coach Eagleson. “I thought that they had too many easy looks in the first half and we had too many fouls. We sent them to the line too many times (7-of-8) in the first half.”

Central will get to “duke-it-out” again with the host Hornets on Friday night in the second semifinal.

Central topped Nashville 45-38 at the Mater Dei Tournament back on December 29.
