CARBONDALE – Things are getting interesting as the regular season enters its final two weeks with many conference championships yet to be decided and the seeding process of the state tournament will be voted upon by the coaches in each of the sub-sectionals.

I've never liked the fact that coaches get to decide who gets seeded in the state tournament.

It's akin to allowing defendants in a trial to sit in on their own jury.

But it's how things are done here in the Land Of Lincoln, or as I like to say, “The Original LOL.”

Breese Central at Columbia on Tuesday night is HUGE in two different ways (Seeding and Conference Championship) as either can make a statement with a win.

Columbia is number-one in both the ABV (since January 1) and the most recent AP Poll (of which I also vote in) and deserving of both.

Coach Sandstrom has kept his team focused throughout the season with just two hiccups against 3A Triad and state-ranked Rockridge at the Great Western Shootout back in December as the only blemishes in an outstanding season so far.

Central has had a few notable losses this season, losing to the top-ranked team in 2A in Tennessee (Briarcrest) along with 3A Mascoutah at the Mater Dei Tournament.

They got upset by the host Hornets at the annual Nashville Invitational Tournament and then they stubbed their collective toes in a 48-44 loss at home to rival Mater Dei last Friday.

Coach Jeremy Shubert's club can make amends in a big way with a victory on the road tonight.

Pinckneyville has also played it's best basketball since the new year began for Coach Bob Waggoner and they have some key games remaining, a home battle against Carterville at home that could force a tie for the league championship in the SIRR Mississippi Division.

Massac County appears to have locked up the top-seed in their sub-sectional.

The Patriots avenged two of their four losses (Herrin, Murphysboro) in rematches with each while the other two defeats came against highly regarded teams from out of state Paducah (KY.) Tilghman and Charleston (MO.).

Teutopolis will be the top-seed in their sub-sectional as they hold convincing wins over most of those teams.

Coach Chet Reeder and his club popped Newton last week, 69-49, and they will host their own regional.

Of the three losses for Vienna, two have come against Massac County (double-digits) and a narrow loss to 23-2 3A Herrin.

Coach Stephen Dreher has been just what the doctor ordered for this club in deep southern Illinois.

They will need to come up big in the postseason if they want some hardware with the last regional title coming in 2006-07.

Anytime you can host a regional it is a bonus for your club and both Benton and Nashville, who have had some issues this season, get to play at home in the first week of the playoffs.

The Rangers have won their last two games and should be a factor in their own regional as will the Hornets.

Both have had difficult stretches but the talent is there to cut down their own nets.

Carterville is also a club that has had issues but they're not without an upset chance in the postseason.

Carmi-White County has a winning streak going but the Bulldogs have 12 of their wins against sub .500 teams so far.

They are part of what looks like a pretty tough sub-sectional as they will go to either Benton or Harrisburg where three of the teams on this list will be involved.

In 1A Altamont and head coach John Niebrugge will have a tough route no matter which regional they end up at (South Central or Nokomis) where four of the other teams in the ABV Top 10 will be divided up.

A big win over Nokomis last Friday should lock up the top-seed and, depending on the IHSA, they will travel to one of those hosts with the goal of winning the regional title and getting to play at home in their own 1A sectional.

Casey-Westfield and Coach Tom Brannan have played a brutal schedule and it won't be any easier the rest of the way.

But unlike Altamont and the other four, the Warriors are in a sub-sectional that has themselves and Tuscola as the top ones which will separate the two clubs.

The other Warriors (Tuscola) are one of the hosts which means C-W will surely end up at the Cumberland Regional.

As mentioned before you never know what sort of seeding will come out of the online meetings.

Effingham St. Anthony is one of those programs you really don't want to see in your part of the bracket in the postseason.

Coach Cody Rincker leads a program that has notched 25 regional championships, five sectional titles and a state title in 2016-17 in its history.

They will have a say in the postseason as they always do.

Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran jumped into the season with a 23-game win streak that was snapped last Friday night 40-38 at Alton Marquette.

The Silver Stallions will be part of a tough sub-sectional with Altamont and St. A.

Coach Dan DeWerff has his Nokomis club ready to host one of these loaded regionals.

The Redskins have five of six defeats to good teams that include 2A Williamsville, 2A Pinckneyville, 3A Taylorville, 1A Altamont, and 1A CORL while posting eight victories over 2A clubs and a win over 3A Mattoon.

They would probably love another shot at Altamont at home after dropping a 53-49 decision to the Indians last Friday at home.

Crab Orchard is likely the top-seed for the sub-sectional in the deep south part of the Carbondale 1A Super-sectional complex.

With a win last night over Mounds Meridian (90-86) the Trojans will host a regional that will be winnable.

Coach Jon Brown had the flexibility to add a couple of games to prove their merit and the win over the Bobcats likely secured the top spot.

Their 120-118 triple-overtime loss on Friday night to Lovejoy ranks as one of the highest scoring games in IHSA history.

When you play tough schedules there is sometimes a “roller coaster” effect where what are perceived as upsets happen and North Clay and head coach Josh Zink have found that out.

A bad loss to Neoga on the road was followed up by a nice win over Dieterich last week as the Cardinals will be part of the sub-sectional with some of these top dawgs when it begins February 18th.

Wayne City has quietly won 20-games again for Coach Jake Talbert and the Indians have the resume to be the top-seed in Sub-sectional A.

They have some good wins over larger schools on the schedule (by design).

It's not a stretch to think that this Tribe could win the program's first sectional title in a few weeks.

Not only will Tuscola host a regional the Warriors will get a shot at Altamont this coming Saturday at the annual NTC/CIC Shootout at Altamont.

Head coach Justin Bozarth sent away the ABV 1A POY last spring (Jalen Quinn) but the returning players have the squad poised for another regional title.

Unfortunately Tuscola gets bumped back up to 2A next season so they might as well enjoy this coming postseason trek.

You can take the won-loss mark of Okawville with a grain of salt as the Rockets routinely play a 'tough as a $2 steak' schedule with 1A, 2A and 3A teams.

Coach Ryan Heck has seen improvement from his club and when the regionals begin it won't be a shock if this coach and club have the 'scissors ready' to 'cut down the twine'.

Next week will be the final rankings of the season as the state tournaments will take us home to Champaign and the state finals.

1. ALTAMONT (19-3)
The Tribe picked up big road wins over 2A Flora and 1A Nokomis last week. This program hasn't won an NTC out-right regular season title since 1979-80.
2. CASEY-WESTFIELD (14-7)
The five teams remaining on the Warriors' schedule have a combined 92 wins. At Teutopolis and Lawrenceville highlight another tough week.
3. EFFINGHAM ST. ANTHONY (17-9)
The Northsiders have four games remaining, including games against the top two on this list. The overall winning percentage of their opponents is a sparkling 63.8 percent.
4. CENTRALIA CHRIST OUR ROCK LUTHERAN (24-1)
The Silver Stallions finally tasted defeat at Marquette last Friday. However they will secure a good slot in the postseason in another of the tough sub-sectionals.
5. NOKOMIS (23-6)
The Redskins dropped a tough game to Altamont on Friday at home. The final two games are against teams that are 9-38 as they try to win their 21st regional title.
6. CRAB ORCHARD (23-3)
The Trojans likely secured a top-seed in their sub-sectional with a win over Meridian Monday. A 120-118 3OT loss to Lovejoy on Friday is the 7th highest scoring game in IHSA history.
7. NORTH CLAY (18-8)
Unexpected beat down at Neoga was followed by wins over Dieterich and Patoka/Odin. The final three games are against teams that are 49-26.
8. WAYNE CITY (20-6)
The Indians sport three wins over 2A teams this season and they look like a top-seed in their sub-sectional. More tough games coming up to close out the regular season campaign.
9. TUSCOLA (21-4)
The Warriors finished third in their conference tournament last week. They get a crack at Altamont at the CIC/NTC Shootout challenge on February 11.
10. OKAWVILLE (9-17)
Forget about the record, the Rockets have played an exceptional schedule with 17 games against 2A and 3A teams with 13 of them sitting with 20 wins or will soon have 20. A postseason factor.
Knocking on the Door in Alphabetical Order. Arcola, Cisne, Cumberland, Dieterich, Goreville, Marissa/Coulterville, Mounds Meridian, New Athens, Neoga, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, Pope County, South Central, St. Elmo/Brownstown, Sesser-Valier, Steeleville, Waltonville, Webber Township and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.
1. COLUMBIA (25-2)
The Eagles haven't lost since December 17 (Rockridge) and take a 17-game win streak into Tuesday night's battle at home against Breese Central, a huge contest for sub-sectional seeding.
2. PINCKNEYVILLE (24-3)
The Panthers have an 11-game win streak going and they have three important games coming up, starting with a road game at rival Nashville on Friday.
3. MASSAC COUNTY (22-4)
The Patriots added wins over Harrisburg and Carterville, both of which are big for the seeding of their sub-sectional. Three important games remain before it gets postseason real.
4. BREESE CENTRAL (22-4)
The Cougars lost to crosstown nemesis BMD last week but they can make up for it with a win at top-ranked Columbia on Tuesday. There is much on the line for the conference and postseason.
5. TEUTOPOLIS (18-7)
After a tough week, the Wooden Shoes responded with a trio of key wins (Newton, St. Anthony, Robinson). They finish with three-straight games with 3A teams.
6. VIENNA (24-3)
The Eagles close out with four games against three squads with sub .500 records. They need one more win to break the single-season school record for victories.
7. BENTON (18-8)
Following a tough three-game skid, the Rangers responded with a pair of wins. They host one of the 2A regionals coming up, which is always a plus.
8. CARTERVILLE (20-6)
The Lions have a key game left in the regular season at Pinckneyville. A win over the Panthers would give them the Mississippi Division title for the first time.
9. CARMI-WHITE COUNTY (20-4)
The Bulldogs are on a 12-game win streak and they should get some votes for one of the top seeds in their sub-sectional.
10. NASHVILLE (17-11)
The Hornets have won 10-of-12 since January 1 and posted a pair of shootout victories last week. A Friday night home game against Pinckneyville is also a biggie for the conference standings.
