ABV FINAL RANKINGS - 02-11-13

These are the final rankings of the season. The regional's will now separate the teams from here on out. ABV still believes it is going to be very interesting in both classes in the next few weeks heading to Peoria. Harrisburg and Teutopolis are on a collision course at SIU but they will have a lot of work to do before that happens. Woodlawn is still the favorite in 1A to reach the Carbondale Super but there are some good teams that will stand in the way. Gallatin County has some familiar surroundings for its potential trip to SIU, playing at home in the regional and then a few miles away to Hardin County for the sectional. As with election returns, some regional's are rated as "too close to call." In any case, the Road to Peoria will hopefully be an enjoyable one. On a side note, sometimes good teams that play well are overlooked. I sometimes forget how good some of the teams are that I haven't seen. I didn't give Chester a fair shake on my final rankings. It was an oversight by ABV. At 17-7 these Yellow Jackets are a far cry from the teams that struggled in years past. Coach Norman has his club playing well.
ABV Class 1A Rankings
1. MADISON (14-9)
The Trojans move up to the top spot here. They picked up a nice win over 2A Paris at the Teutopolis Shootout on Saturday. The long drive to Carrollton next week awaits.
2. WATERLOO GIBAULT (21-5)
These Hawks grabbed another win this past week at Wesclin and face a couple of tough games (Alton Marquette, St. Pius X) to close out the season. Top seed at Valmeyer.
3. OKAWVILLE (22-6)
The Rockets appear to be ready for a big postseason move. Three more wins this past week. Road game at Sparta and at home to Mater Dei closes a brutal regular season slate.
4. WOODLAWN (22-3)
The Cardinals got a wake-up call with a home loss to 2A Flora on Saturday night. This might be just what the doctor ordered for a team that could reach Peoria again.
5. GALLATIN COUNTY (21-3)
The Hawks have just 2A losses to Harrisburg (2) and Nashville. They have signature wins over Goreville and Meridian. Coach Patton's troops should earn a spot at Hardin County.
6. GOREVILLE (22-4)
The Blackcats won two more BDC games last week and beat rival Vienna at home. Coach Tripp has his club ready to win the league outright with a victory @ Chester Saturday night.
7. MERIDIAN (21-6)
The Bobcats scored 125-points in a win over Caruthersville (MO.) and topped Dongola. Another SEC crown awaits. They will host the usual league teams plus Cairo in the regional.
8. OBLONG (17-10)
The Panthers have a pair of tough games to close the regular season @ Dieterich and home to Robinson. Anthony Johnson is getting some serious college looks.
9. NEW ATHENS (19-6)
The Jackets become the first team other than Lebanon to ever win the Kaskaskia Division title of the Cahokia Conference in boy's hoops. Tough regional is ahead.
10. NOKOMIS (18-9)
The Redskins were brought back to earth with a lopsided loss to Virden North Mac. They are the top seed at St. Elmo but not an overwhelming pick.
Special Mention In Alphabetical Order
Altamont, Cairo, Christ Our Rock Lutheran, Christopher, Cisne, Cowden-Herrick, Dieterich, Egyptian, Patoka, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, Sesser-Valier, Steeleville, St. Elmo, Stewardson-Strasburg and Waltonville.
ABV Class 2A Rankings
1. HARRISBURG (25-1)
Two more wins for the Top Dawgs last week put the conference title to rest. Coach Smithpeters and his top-ranked crew must get ready for the postseason.
2. TEUTOPOLIS (23-3)
The Wooden Shoes beat Vandalia and 4A Alton last week and are primed for a big run. They host their annual end of season game with Madison on Friday night.
3. ROBINSON (22-4)
The Maroons hammered Flora and edged 3A Mascoutah last week as the Maroons are also looking forward to possible playing in March. Their regional is also loaded.
4. NASHVILLE (21-6)
The Hornets held serve this past weekend with SIRR Miss Division wins over Pinckneyville and A-J. Coach Weathers club has the personnel to make for an interesting postseason.
5. CARLYLE (20-7)
With a win Friday night @ Red Bud, Coach Palmer's Indians will win the Cahokia Conference Mississippi Division title. Then it is on to a tough regional tournament @ Central.
6. CASEY-WESTFIELD (17-6)
The Warriors are right behind Robinson in the LIC standings and if the Maroons slip on Friday night, C-W can get a share of the title. They play Cumberland and St. Anthony this week.
7. NEWTON (22-5)
The Eagles won't have to hit the road again for a game unless they win their own regional next week. They close the regular season with Flora at home.
8. BREESE CENTRAL (19-8)
The Cougars didn't win their conference title but they shouldn't be left out of the conversation for the regional title, an event in which they host.
9. ROXANA (20-7)
The Shells picked up a big win over rival Alton Marquette last week. Hunter Reine is continuing to play well for Coach Briggs. Another team that could make some postseason waves.
10. CARTERVILLE (13-11)
The Lions, after struggling for most of the season, are playing their best basketball now. Coach Scott Burzynski's team is in a winnable regional set up.
10A. CHESTER (17-7)
The Yellow Jackets have had a solid season and ABV tends to forget about how good this program has become. A win over Goreville on Saturday will get them a share of the BDC West title.
Special Mention In Alphabetical Order
Breese Mater Dei, Carterville, Fairfield, Flora, Freeburg, Marshall, Mt. Carmel, Murphysboro, Pana, Pinckneyville, Sparta, Staunton, Trico and Vandalia.
