WOODLAWN - The late great Chicago Cubs' Hall of Fame shortstop Ernie Banks would have been smiling Saturday with many teams deciding “Let's Play Two” with multiple double-headers going on.

The Mount Carmel Golden Aces, who hadn't played or practiced much (if all) in the last eight days, hit the road for a pair of games on Saturday at Salem and Woodlawn.

Coach Tyler Buss and his club “broke out the brooms” as they swept their pair of contests.

The Aces rallied from a double-digit deficit to defeat Salem 62-58 and then took care of Woodlawn, 54-29.

After struggling early in it's second game of the day against host Woodlawn, the Aces got going with a big second quarter to roll past the Cardinals 54-29.

Mount Carmel is now 4-1 on the season as they secured a pair of victories on Saturday.

The Aces placed three players in double-digit scoring in the victory.

Kaleb Applebey produced 13 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Aces while teammates Beau Stipp and Ethan Belt “belted” the Cardinals with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Gavin Smith threw in eight points for these Road Warriors on Saturday.

After getting past Salem in the morning, a quit trip to Woodlawn produced another win as the Aces got on track with a big second quarter to stop the Cardinals.

Woodlawn and first year head coach Dawson Verhines hung with the Aces in the early going but were outscored 17-4 in the second quarter as they fell to 2-4 on the season.

Hayden England was the lone Cardinal in double-figures with 15 points while freshman Chance Phelps added six.

Mount Carmel added to the advantage in each of the final two quarters to cap off its 2-0 day.

The Aces hit 20-of-38 shots from the floor overall and hit 4-of-14 3-point shots in the win.

Three of the 3-pointers came during a 15-2 run to open the second quarter.

Stipp nailed the first 3-pointer on the first possession of the frame and, after a Woodlawn bucket by Phelps, the Aces scored the next 12 points.

Applebey powered inside for a couple of scores, one of the baskets as he grabbed his own rebound for a bucket.

Two long 3-pointers from the right corner sandwiched around a score by sophomore Gavin Smith forced a Woodlawn timeout at 26-13 with 2:45 left before halftime.

Phelps added a basket for the hosts, which stopped the Aces run but a pair of free throws by Belt made it 28-15 at intermission.

The Cardinals needed a big beginning in the third quarter but offensively Woodlawn committed three consecutive turnovers, which turned into five straight points for Mount Carmel.

Stipp hit 1-of-2 free throws before adding consecutive baskets on drives in the lane.

Smith then added two more shots, both from inside, for a 37-17 spread with just under four minutes remaining.

England scored both baskets for Woodlawn in the third and Phelps added 1-of-2 free throws as the quarter ended at 39-20 Mount Carmel.

A 13-3 scoring spree in the middle of the fourth quarter gave the Aces their third road win of the season.

After losing four scheduled games to weather and opponents Covid, Mount Carmel shook off the cobwebs for two big wins.

The Aces could have made things a bit worse on Woodlawn had they been more productive from the foul line.

Mount Carmel ended up just 8-of-20 from the stripe.

Woodlawn connected on just 11-of-32 attempts overall and just 3-of-12 from the arc.

Behind Applebey, the Aces held a 25-16 rebounding edge.

That included keeping the Cardinals off of the offensive boards.

Coach Verhines' club grabbed just two offensive rebounds, one each in the third and fourth quarters.

The Cardinals started the game well, leading 4-0 early and hitting 5-of-9 field goal attempts, including a 3-pointer from junior Drew Martin and two buckets by England.

However Mount Carmel tied the game at the end of the first quarter with junior Luke Laws and Smith scoring to even things at 11-all.
