In talking about his 2017-18 team, head coach Doug Mammoser said “this team has a bunch of potential.”

How much potential is in a bunch is the question.Normally the Newton Eagles are more than just competitive and this season, the last of this coach's career, could be a very good way to go out.

Coach Mammoser mentioned five seniors with experience coming back from the team that won the Dieterich Holiday Tournament and lost to Lawrenceville in the regionals.

Six-foot-five senior Nich Cohorst returns up front for the Eagles along with 6-foot-3 senior Collin Harris.

Zach Meinhart, a 6-foot-3 senior, 6-foot-1 Ben Carr and 6-foot Jack Chapman, both seniors, return.

Coach Mammoser mentioned one junior; 6-foot-2 Connor Bierman, who will help out.

“It could be very good, but since we did not win a conference game last year, we must prove we can compete. Nick Cohorst and Collin Harris must lead the way,” said Coach Mammoser, who has announced his retirement . “They can be very good players but must be more assertive and consistent. The team is pretty athletic overall. We must be able to deal with size in the post and we must show much more toughness than we have over the last three years.”

OUTLOOK – It would be a nice touch to send this head coach to retirement with a winning season. If the potential turns out to be 'a whole bunch' then the Eagles could be in the fight for the conference title. In any case, Coach Mammoser has done a great job on the sidelines at this school over the years and he will be missed on the bench at Newton.
