IHSA
Approves Fall Sports Modified Postseason
Girl's Softball to move to Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria 2021-25;
Board hears presentation for implication of shot clock in basketball
|
BLOOMINGTON -
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors
met virtually for their regularly scheduled board meeting on
Monday, August 24, 2020, where the Board approved a plan to
conduct modified postseason state series tournaments in boys
and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, girls swimming
& diving, and girls tennis this fall.
The
approved plan will allow for a single round of regional geographic
competition to be conducted the week of October 19-25, with
the majority of the events expected to be held on Saturday,
October 24.
“The
health and safety of the student-athletes, their coaches, and
their school communities has been our priority from the start
of the pandemic,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson.
“Throughout the spring and summer, we looked for ways
to reengage student-athletes with their peers and coaches, and
our membership has shared countless positive experiences from
that initial ‘return to play’ period. We have found
similar value in being able to conduct fall sports, and believe
the participants deserve a culminating experience if we can
offer it safely.”
The
IHSA State Series tournaments will meet all Illinois Department
of Public Health (IDPH) guidelines as it relates to COVID-19.
The IHSA will be finalizing and releasing details for each fall
state series tournament in the coming weeks, including dates,
schedules, awards, structure, and additional safety precautions.
In
conjunction with the modified fall state series, the Board also
approved a $100 state series entry fee for any school entering
a team or individual in any of the fall sports.
“The
IHSA office is charged with the responsibility of being a good
steward of the Association’s finances,” said Anderson.
“The past few months have seen a significant reduction
in the IHSA’s income, given the cancellation of the IHSA
Boys Basketball State Finals and the entire spring season. Financial
challenges remain on the horizon in 2020-21 due to the limited
number of sports currently classified as ‘low risk’
by the state, making the chances of conducting full state series
tournaments unlikely at this time."
The
IHSA By-laws allow the Board of Directors the discretion to
implement entry fees into IHSA State Series tournaments. The
IHSA last charged a tournament entry fees in 2004-05.
“An
overwhelming number of school administrators supported the fees
in recent surveys,” said Anderson. “Not charging
entry fees has been a point of pride for the IHSA. We are humbled
by the support of our member schools during this difficult time,
and appreciative of their support.”
The
Board will continue to look at the postseason options by sport
and season as the school year progresses, so they can accurately
gauge the allowable IDPH options and most current COVID-19 data.
“Interscholastic
sports, like the IHSA and IESA, have rightfully followed stricter
return to play guidance than non-school events since the start
of the summer,” said Anderson. “While we understand
and appreciate the frustration felt by high school coaches due
to the stricter guidance, we also recognize the need for that
added guidance, even though it may create more challenges for
us. There is a responsibility that exists within the school
setting to create a safer environment for the community as a
whole, while non-school competitions are often conducted without
any standardized safety protocols.”
OTHER BOARD ACTION:
The Board approved a recommendation for the IHSA Girls Softball
State Finals to move to the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria
beginning in 2021.
The
contract encompasses five seasons from 2021-2025.
The
Eastside Centre in East Peoria, who has hosted the state finals
since 2001, also submitted a hosting proposal along with Chicago
Bandits Stadium in Rosemont, the Rantoul Family Sports Complex,
and Southern Illinois University.
IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson:
“Louisville Slugger is an amazing complex and we are excited
to transition the tournament there. The amenities and stadium
feel of the facility will provide an unforgettable experience
for the student-athletes, coaches, and fans. We are excited
for the tourney to remain in the Peoria area, and incredibly
thankful for all that the Eastside Centre and its staff have
done for this tournament through the years. Thank you to all
the groups who submitted bids. They are all amazing places to
watch softball and help highlight why the sport is thriving
in our state.”
The
Board heard a presentation on the potential implementation of
a shot clock in boys and girls basketball from the Illinois
Basketball Coaches Association, who were represented by Michael
Ellis from Evanston (Twp.), Matt Monroe from Chicago (St. Ignatius),
Tyrone Slaughter from Chicago (Whitney Young) and Patrick Woods
from St. Charles (East). The Board and IHSA staff will work
with the presenters on potential next steps.

IHSA
Board Approves Modified Schedule For 2020-21 School Year |
The
Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met
for a special meeting on July 29, 2020, where the Board announced
its intended plans for the 2020-21 school year. The plan has
been sent to the Illinois Department of Health (IDPH) for final
approval.
“This
plan, like nearly every aspect of our current lives, remains
fluid,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “Changes
may come, and if they do, we will be agile while putting safety
and students first. It was important that we provide a framework
today for our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and
officials to begin preparing for the 2020-21 school year.”
The
COVID-19 pandemic led the Board to propose unprecedented scheduling
changes for the 2020-21 school year. They include playing all
sports over the course of truncated fall, winter, spring, and
summer seasons. As a result, several team sports will shift
to new seasons, including football, boys soccer, and girls volleyball
moving from the fall to the spring.
“I
applaud our Board of Directors for choosing a model that allows
every student-athlete the opportunity for a modified season,”
said Anderson. “Based on our recent conversations, it
is our expectation that today’s plan meets all of IDPH’s
safety guidelines and will be approved.”
IHSA
boys and girls golf, girls tennis, cross country and girls swimming
& diving will remain as fall sports, and can proceed to
start on August 10 as scheduled. Per Governor Pritzker’s
announcement on Wednesday, fall sports will begin with competition
limited to conference opponents and other schools in the same
general geographical area. Schools will be provided more details
in the coming week about the scheduling limits, and scheduling
will continue to be assessed throughout each season. The condensed
2020-21 season dates will be as follows (see chart below to
see where each sport falls):
Fall: August 10 to October 24
Winter: November 16 to February 13
Spring: February 15 to May 1
Summer: May 3 to June 26
“The
Board believes this plan offers the most realistic chance for
student-athletes to participate in interscholastic sports while
balancing the challenges of a new academic setting and IDPH
Guidelines,” said Erie High School Principal and IHSA
Board President Tim McConnell. “We are an education-based
athletic association, and school has to come first. By delaying
the majority of the team sports in the fall, it will allow our
schools and students the chance to acclimate to what will be,
for many, a totally new educational experience. We will do our
best to try to give every student-athlete the opportunity for
a season this school year.”
State
Series tournament decisions will be made on a sport-by-sport
basis as each season progresses, but providing postseason opportunities
remains a priority of the Board. This could potentially include
culminating State Series Tournaments after Regional or Sectional
rounds, or seeking other non-traditional means to conduct events.
“I
understand that today’s announcement will be met with
mixed emotions,” said Anderson. “Our staff and Board
have heard from thousands of people over the past few weeks
with ideas, opinions, and proposals on how we should proceed.
We respect and understand their passion, because we share in
it. It is a great reminder that if we want high school sports
to return to normal, we all need to do our part to help stop
the spread of COVID-19.”
The
Board also extended the current Phase 4 Return To Play Guidelines,
which will allow sports slated to be played in the winter, spring
and summer seasons to allow an additional 20 days of contact
for schools between September 7 and October 31 following IDPH
Phase 4 Guidelines.
The
Board also verified that IHSA by-laws do not prevent schools
who are conducting remote learning from participating in IHSA
sports and activities. Participation will remain a local school
and district decision, regardless of the learning plan a high
school is utilizing.
The
Board discussed IHSA activities for the 2020-21 school year
but did not take any action. The IHSA’s activity offerings
include Bass Fishing, Chess, Debate, Drama & Group Interpretation,
Individual Events, Journalism, Music & Scholastic Bowl.
“We
believe we can still offer many of our activities via virtual
contests,” said Anderson. “The Board has asked our
staff to investigate those possibilities, and we will report
back soon on if and how each can be held.”
Further
details on items such as sport season and practice limitations
will be released to IHSA schools following IDPH approval of
the plan.
Three
IHSA Board members (Hasson, McMahan, Rogers) were present at
the IHSA office for the meeting, while the other eight Board
members attended electronically. The chart below outlines the

IHSA Boys Basketball State Finals Return To The
University of Illinois in 2021 |
06-15-2020
BLOOMINGTON
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced on June
15, 2020 (Board recap) that the IHSA Boys Basketball State Finals,
known to fans throughout the Land of Lincoln as America’s
Original March Madness, will return to the campus of the University
of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana beginning with the 2021 state
tournament. The event was previously held in Champaign-Urbana
from 1919 to 1995. The Peoria Civic Center, which has hosted the
boys state tournament since 1996, also submitted a bid to continuing
hosting.
“We
see this as the passing of the torch from Peoria to Champaign-Urbana,”
said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “It is bittersweet
because there is incredible passion for high school basketball
within these two communities, and both have done so much to
elevate the state final experience as hosts. The State Farm
Center is one of the best arenas in the country, and we are
excited to crown state champions there once again. The timing
simply felt right to make a change as the tournament format
shifts in 2021.”
The
state final hosting bid was a joint proposal from the University
of Illinois, the Fighting Illini Athletic Department, State
Farm Center, Visit Champaign County, and the Champaign-Urbana
communities. The proposal is a three-year bid encompassing the
2021 (March 11-13), 2022 (March 10-12) and 2023 (March 9-11)
state tournaments.
“We
are thrilled with today’s news that the Illinois high
school boys basketball state finals will return home to the
campus of the University of Illinois,” said Illinois Director
of Athletics Josh Whitman. “We are grateful to the IHSA
and its leadership for choosing State Farm Center and Champaign-Urbana
to host the state finals. We are humbled by their confidence
in our community, which I know will come together to provide
the players, families, and fans of the state’s best teams
a once-in-a-lifetime experience. My thanks to the many people
and organizations locally who collaborated on a compelling bid
and proposal. We look forward to showcasing the state’s
flagship university, celebrating the many virtues of Champaign-Urbana,
and maximizing the full spectrum of amenities in State Farm
Center to visitors from all across Illinois. The relationship
between the IHSA and the University of Illinois extends back
more than 100 years, and we are excited to continue this longstanding,
positive partnership many years into the future.”
Among
the many highlights, the bid includes interactive fan elements
around the arena, city and campus marketing initiatives, a special
in-arena area for parents with children, and 13 local hotels
locking in three-year prices for fans below rack rate. The IHSA’s
Wheelchair Basketball State Tournament and Special Olympics
Illinois Unified Basketball Tournament will continue to be held
in conjunction with the state tournament in Champaign-Urbana
as well.
“We
are ecstatic to welcome the IHSA Boys State Basketball Tournament
back to its original home at the University of Illinois,”
said Jayne DeLuce, President & CEO of Visit Champaign County.
“Our community has evolved into a much broader vision
incorporating sports, education, technology, and a place of
diverse culture that will provide incredible experiences for
all involved. We are ready to embrace a new tradition of welcoming
teams, families, fans, officials, and media for the experience
of a lifetime.”
The
State Farm Center is fresh off a $170 million dollar state-of-the-art
renovation that was completed in 2016. The building has also
been home to IHSA Individual Wrestling State Finals each winter
since 1973.
“The
Illinois boys basketball state tournament is back where it belongs,
right here at State Farm Center,” said Kevin Ullestad,
UI Senior Associate Director of Athletics, State Farm Center
Director. “Our building will provide the most memorable
experience for all the teams and fans who attend this outstanding
event every year. After talking with many of the former high
school stars who played in the building during the state finals
it was clear that playing in the state’s premier basketball
facility left a lifetime memory.”
The
State Tournament has recently been held over the course of two
weekends, but will begin a new format in 2021 that features
all four classes being played over the course of three days,
culminating with four state championships games on Saturday.
“It’s
difficult to express how grateful we are to the city of Peoria,
the Civic Center, the surrounding communities, and the army
of volunteers who have so vigorously supported the state tournament
for a quarter of a century in Peoria,” Anderson. “We
understand there may be some initial disappointment, but ultimately,
we hope they are as proud as we are for overseeing one of the
most decorated eras in IHSA basketball with class, grace, and
innovation. We love Peoria and look forward to the numerous
IHSA events we will continue to conduct there.”
The
IHSA will be contacting current state final season ticket holders
in the near future to work with them on seating at the State
Farm Center. Individuals interested in becoming new state final
season ticket holders can submit their info online at https://fightingillini.com/ihsabb.
The University of Illinois ticket office will follow-up with
anyone who submits a season ticket inquiry form in the near
future to let them know available seating, pricing and more.
Since
the first IHSA Boys Basketball State Final Tournament was held
at the YMCA in Oak Park in 1908, just six different communities
(Bloomington, Decatur, Springfield, Peoria) have hosted the
event. Champaign-Urbana has hosted more than any other community,
as 77 IHSA seasons have culminated there. That history includes
the community’s first hosting opportunity when the state
finals were held in the University’s Men’s Gym Annex
(now Kenney Gym) in 1919. It remained there until being moved
to Huff Hall in 1926, and then found a home at Assembly Hall
(now State Farm Center) from 1963 to 1995.
“IHSA
basketball has deep roots and a celebrated history on the University
of Illinois campus and within the Champaign-Urbana community,”
said Anderson. “It’s almost indescribable when you
think of all the iconic players and coaches who were a part
of the state tournament here. Names like Johnny Orr, Quinn Buckner,
Jack Sikma, Isiah Thomas, The Three Amigos (Donnie Boyce, Sherell
Ford, Michael Finley), Deon Thomas, Dick Corn, Bruce Douglas,
Sonny Cox, Gordie Kerkman, Ronnie Fields, Gene Pingatore, Jay
Shidler and Flying Illini like Kendall Gill, Nick Anderson and
Marcus Liberty. I could probably name 100 more. We look forward
to celebrating that history, and making new memories as America’s
Original March Madness returns to Champaign-Urbana and the University
of Illinois.”
